I spent my first two winters in my garage shop wearing three layers, fingerless gloves, and wondering why I was doing this to myself. My hands were stiff, my finishes would not cure properly, and every glue-up was a race against the cold before the adhesive seized. A heated shop is not a luxury, it is the difference between a shop you actually use year-round and one that sits idle for four months.

But heating a workshop is not like heating a living room. You have dust, solvents, seasonal temperature swings, and usually poor insulation. The wrong heater in a wood shop is a fire hazard or a money pit. Let me break down what actually works.

Critical safety consideration: Open-flame heaters (unvented propane, kerosene) are genuinely dangerous in a woodworking shop. Fine sawdust is combustible. Finishing products release flammable vapors. An open flame in a room with airborne sawdust is an explosion risk, not just a fire risk. This eliminates several cheap heating options right away.

First, insulation is typically poor. Garage doors, thin walls, and concrete floors lose heat rapidly. You are fighting the building envelope the entire time. Second, dust collection systems pull conditioned air out of the shop and replace it with cold outside air through makeup air paths. Third, you open doors frequently to move lumber and materials in and out. Any heating solution needs to handle these realities.

Heating Options Compared

Forced-Air Gas Heaters (Vented/Separated Combustion)

A vented, separated-combustion natural gas or propane unit hangs from the ceiling, pulls combustion air from outside, and exhausts products of combustion outside. The heated air blows into the shop through a fan. This is the most popular workshop heating solution for good reason, it heats the space quickly, the combustion is sealed away from shop dust, and operating costs are reasonable on natural gas.

Typical units for a two-car garage shop are in the 45,000 to 75,000 BTU range. Expect to pay $800 to $1,500 for the unit plus $500 to $1,000 for gas line installation if you do not have one already. Operating costs depend on your gas rates, but heating a two-car garage to 60 degrees in a northern climate typically runs $80 to $150 per month during the cold season.

Sizing rule of thumb: For a poorly insulated garage, figure about 30-40 BTU per square foot. A 500 square foot shop needs 15,000 to 20,000 BTU. A 750 square foot shop needs 22,000 to 30,000 BTU. If your garage door is uninsulated, add 30% to those numbers. These are estimates, your climate, ceiling height, and insulation level all affect the actual requirement.

Radiant Tube Heaters

Infrared radiant tubes mount near the ceiling and heat objects and surfaces below them rather than heating the air. This is a fundamentally different approach, your tools, your workpiece, the floor, and you absorb the radiant energy directly. The air temperature can be lower while you feel just as comfortable because the surfaces around you are warm.

Radiant heat has a significant advantage in shops with poor insulation and frequent door openings. When you open the garage door to move lumber in, a forced-air system loses all its heated air instantly. A radiant system loses very little because the heat is stored in the floor and objects, not the air. The shop feels warm again within minutes of closing the door instead of the 30 minutes a forced-air system needs to recover.

Downside: radiant heaters cost more upfront (typically $1,200 to $2,500 installed) and create warm and cool zones. The area directly under the tube is warmest, and corners can be cooler. For large shops, you may need multiple tubes to get even coverage.

Mini-Split Heat Pumps

A ductless mini-split provides both heating and cooling from an efficient electric heat pump. Modern units work down to -15 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, so they handle most climates. Installation runs $2,500 to $4,500, but operating costs are significantly lower than gas, heat pumps deliver 2 to 3 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.

Mini-splits have the added benefit of dehumidification in summer, which protects your tools from rust and your lumber from absorbing moisture. The downside is upfront cost and the fact that they heat more slowly than a gas forced-air unit. If you arrive at a 20 degree shop wanting to work in 30 minutes, a mini-split takes longer to bring the space up to temperature than a high-BTU gas heater.

Electric Space Heaters

Portable electric heaters are the most accessible option but also the least efficient for large spaces. A 1,500-watt heater produces about 5,100 BTU, enough to take the edge off a small corner of a shop, but nowhere near enough to heat a full garage. You would need five or six units to match a single gas heater, and the electricity cost would be staggering.

Where electrics make sense: If you only need to heat a small area, a workbench zone in a larger shop, a radiant electric panel mounted above the bench can warm your immediate work area for a reasonable cost. You are not heating the whole shop, just the 30 square feet where you are standing. For full-shop heating, electric is usually the most expensive option per BTU.

Insulation First, Then Heat

Whatever heating method you choose, insulating the shop first dramatically improves the results and lowers your operating costs. An insulated garage door alone can cut heat loss by 30-40 percent. Adding wall insulation to an uninsulated garage is a weekend project that pays for itself within one heating season.

The floor is the biggest heat sink. Concrete absorbs heat relentlessly. A layer of interlocking foam tiles or rubber mats provides meaningful insulation underfoot and makes standing comfortable at the same time. You will not heat a concrete slab to comfortable temperatures, but you can insulate yourself from it.
