Build a Simple Wooden Laptop Stand in One Afternoon

You are hunched over your laptop right now, aren't you? Your neck is craned forward, your shoulders are rounded, and by 3 PM your upper back is screaming. A laptop stand that raises the screen to eye level fixes all of this, and building one from wood takes a single afternoon.
I have built probably a dozen of these as gifts over the years. They are the perfect quick project, simple joinery, minimal material, and the recipient actually uses it every single day. Here is my favorite design that balances aesthetics, function, and build simplicity.
Design Overview
This stand raises the laptop screen approximately 5 to 6 inches, which puts most 13 to 15-inch laptop screens at eye level when you are sitting at a standard desk. The design uses two side panels connected by a rear support rail and a front lip that keeps the laptop from sliding off.
The footprint is 12 inches wide by 10 inches deep, large enough for any laptop up to 16 inches but small enough to leave desk space for a keyboard and mouse in front of it. The open design underneath allows air circulation for cooling.
Materials You Need
This project uses minimal material. You probably have enough scrap in your shop right now:
Two side panels: 3/4-inch hardwood, 10 inches tall by 10 inches deep. You will shape these into the curved profile. One platform: 3/4-inch hardwood or plywood, 12 inches wide by 10 inches deep. One front lip: 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch hardwood strip, 12 inches long. One rear rail: 3/4-inch by 1.5-inch hardwood, 12 inches long.
For wood species, I recommend walnut, cherry, or maple for a clean modern look. Oak works great if you want something with more grain character. Plywood is fine for the platform if you edge-band the front, nobody sees it once the laptop is sitting on it.
Shaping the Side Panels
The side panels give this stand its visual character. Start with a 10-by-10-inch square of 3/4-inch stock. The front edge height is 5 inches, that is how high the platform sits. The rear edge height is 6.5 inches, the extra 1.5 inches creates the backward tilt for the screen.
Draw a gentle curve connecting the top front corner (at 5 inches) to the top rear corner (at 6.5 inches). I use a flexible strip of wood or a French curve to draw a smooth arc. The bottom edge can be straight or you can add a decorative arch that lifts the stand off the desk on two feet, this looks lighter and more elegant.
Cut the curves on a bandsaw or with a jigsaw. Clean up the saw marks with a spindle sander, drum sander on the drill press, or just careful hand sanding with a sanding block wrapped around a dowel. Sand to 180 grit and ease all edges with a light roundover, either a 1/8-inch roundover bit on the router or just a few passes with sandpaper.
Cutting the Platform and Rails
The platform is a flat rectangle, 12 inches wide by 10 inches deep. If using solid wood, orient the grain running side to side for maximum strength. If using plywood, grain direction does not matter but apply iron-on edge banding to the front edge for a clean look.
The front lip prevents the laptop from sliding forward. Cut it from 1/2-inch stock, 3/4 inch tall, and 12 inches long. Round over the top edge so it does not scratch the laptop base.
The rear rail adds structural rigidity and keeps the laptop from sliding backward. Cut it from 3/4-inch stock, 1.5 inches tall, and 12 inches long.
Assembly
The joinery is straightforward. Attach the platform to the side panels with glue and pocket screws driven from underneath, the screw holes are completely hidden by the desk surface. Alternatively, use dados in the side panels to capture the platform edges for a cleaner mechanical joint.
Glue and pin-nail the front lip to the front edge of the platform. The lip should sit flush with the bottom surface of the platform and extend 3/4 inch above it.
Attach the rear rail the same way, glue and pin nails or pocket screws. The rail connects the two side panels at the back and prevents racking.
Adding Non-Slip Features
A wooden laptop stand on a wooden desk is a sliding disaster waiting to happen. Add four small adhesive rubber bumper pads to the bottom of the stand. You can find these at any hardware store in the furniture section, the clear round ones are nearly invisible.
On the platform surface where the laptop sits, apply a thin strip of non-slip shelf liner or adhesive-backed rubber along the front edge behind the lip. This prevents the laptop from slowly creeping forward from keyboard vibration. A narrow strip is enough, you do not want to cover the whole surface because airflow underneath the laptop helps with cooling.
Finishing
Sand the entire assembled stand to 220 grit. For a natural look, apply 2 to 3 coats of a wipe-on polyurethane or Danish oil. Danish oil is my preference for desk accessories because it gives a warm satin finish that feels great to touch and does not show fingerprints.
For a more modern look, try a matte water-based polyurethane, it protects the wood without changing the color much. Whatever you choose, make sure the finish is fully cured before placing a laptop on it. Tacky finish plus warm laptop equals a bad day.
Let the final coat cure for at least 48 hours before use. I know it is tempting to use it immediately but fresh finish on a desk accessory will get damaged fast under a warm laptop.
Why This Project Matters
A laptop stand is one of those rare woodworking projects where the person who receives it will use it for hours every single day. It improves their posture, reduces neck strain, and looks a thousand times better than a plastic stand from Amazon. You can build it from scraps in three hours, and it makes one of the best handmade gifts you can give to anyone who works at a computer.
This is the kind of project that gets people asking "where did you get that?", and the answer is always better when it is "I made it."
