Build a Router Table Fence That Actually Stays Straight

The Fence Is More Important Than the Router
That sounds backwards, but hear it out. You can have the most powerful, smoothest-running router in the world, and if your fence flexes or drifts mid-cut, your workpiece is ruined. Picture a dado for a shelf that starts at 3/4" wide and ends at 7/8" because the fence bowed under clamping pressure. That shelf never fits, and the whole piece has to be re-milled.
The router table fence is the reference surface your workpiece rides against. If it moves even a little, your cut moves with it. A good fence needs to be straight, stiff, and easy to adjust without losing alignment. Most commercial fences handle this fine, but they cost more than the router table itself. Let me show you how to build one for under $40 that outperforms most of them.
Why Most Shop-Made Fences Fail

And it works, until you apply lateral pressure from feeding a workpiece, at which point the board flexes away from the cut. You tighten the clamps harder, which bows the fence in the middle. You shim the middle, which creates a hump. It becomes an endless game of chasing flatness.
The fix is building a fence with an L-shaped or T-shaped cross-section. The vertical face references the workpiece, and a horizontal base or back brace prevents flexing. Think of it like a structural beam, the depth of the cross-section is what gives it rigidity, not the thickness of the material.
The Build
Step 1: The Fence Body
Cut two pieces of 3/4" Baltic birch plywood: one for the face (4" tall x 30" long) and one for the base (3" wide x 30" long). Glue and screw them together at 90 degrees to form an L-shape. The base sits flat on the router table surface, and the face stands vertical. This L-profile is remarkably stiff, far more than a single board of the same thickness.
Use Baltic birch specifically because it stays flat. Regular plywood or MDF will warp over time, and a warped fence defeats the entire purpose.
Step 2: The Aluminum Straightedge
Here's the upgrade that makes this fence exceptional: attach a length of 1" x 1" aluminum angle to the face of the fence using countersunk machine screws. The aluminum gives you a dead-straight reference surface that won't dent, swell, or wear. You can buy a 36" length of aluminum angle at any hardware store for a few dollars.
Step 3: Dust Collection Port
Cut a 2-1/2" hole in the fence face directly behind the bit opening. Attach a short section of 2-1/2" PVC coupling over the hole on the back side. Your shop vac hose plugs right in. This isn't optional, routing without dust collection buries your workpiece in chips and makes it impossible to see your cut line.
Step 4: The Clamping System
This is where most people overcomplicate things. You have two good options:
- T-track in the table: Install two lengths of T-track in your router table surface, parallel to the front edge. Bolts through slots in the fence base slide in the tracks, and star knobs lock it down. This is the cleanest solution.
- Through-bolts with slots: Cut two 4" long slots in the fence base. Drill matching holes in the router table. Bolts drop through the slots and through the table, with star knobs underneath. Simpler to build, works just as well.
Step 5: Split Fence Option
For jointing operations on the router table (straightening edges), you need the outfeed side of the fence offset slightly forward. Build the fence face in two halves with a gap at the bit opening. The outfeed half gets shimmed forward by the depth of cut, usually the thickness of a piece of laminate or a playing card taped to the face. This turns your router table into a surprisingly capable jointer for narrow stock.
Setting Up the Fence
To set the distance from the bit, use a combination square. Set the square to the desired distance, hold it against the bit, and slide the fence until it touches the end of the square blade. A Good Fence Lasts Forever
A properly built router fence stays dead straight for years. The aluminum face picks up wear marks from workpieces sliding against it, but the reference surface does not change. That is a lot more than can be said for the board-and-clamp fences most people go through first. Spend the afternoon, build it right once, and stop fighting your fence on every cut.
