TWP2: Woodworking With Other People

In the second episode of The Woodworking Podcast we’re talking about working with other people in our shops.

Episode notes:

  • Breaking News:
    • April – Working on behind the scenes stuff this week.
    • Nick – Nearing the end of the TV Lift Cabinet Saga.
    • Jay – Recovering from Hurricane Ferry.
  • Episode Topic: Working with other people in your shop.
  • Questions From YouTube:
    • Marty Dufour – I have been struggling to shoot my “first” You Tube video. What was your first video like? Did you do an Intro? Did you write a script? Everyone tells me just be yourself but, It’s hard trying to be yourself while on a video. Sort of breaking the ice.
    • Trevor Vera – will you all do a build off, say like the 2×4 challenge, or what could make with minimum tools. For me being overseas tools are hard to come by, all we have here are a few drills and circular saw.

I wonder do you elect in your mind whose responsible enough to work in your shop due to the way they upkeep their own shop, because some that you see are very messy than others. I guess that would be my personal pet peeve. What’s your guys feelings on that aspect of shop etiquette.?

I’d feel right at home in Nick’s shop. Mine is in about the same. Some call it a MESS, I call it my own brand of organized confusion. I’m not really going to organize my basement shop because I hope this spring to move it to the two car garage. I’m going to clean out the garage, insulate it, and add heat and A/C. That’s the plan anyway. I’ll see how it goes.

I’d feel really self conscious working in April or Jay’s shop. I’d be like…”Can I pick up this pencil and use it? Do I really have to put it back in the Kaisan foam holder in the 2nd bank of drawers from the left, third drawer down, center position?” lol But I’d probably get over it pretty quick and just toss it on a bench or the table saw.

hahahaha! Actually, pencils, as well as all other measuring and marking devices, go in T4-top drawer. The drawer you are referring to is T2-bottom drawer. That’s where all of my hand tools are at lol. The only reason why I have my drawers named like that are to distinguish which ones go where in my PDF plan for the miter saw station. I seriously don’t routinely refer to them that way.

That doesn’t mean my shop doesn’t get messy though. I just like to take the time to clean it up frequently :)

This is my favorite podcast. The three of you my favorite Youtube woodworkers. Your topics are on point and so interesting. Please son’t stop doing these I love them. Here’s a question for you all. Do you stress making gifts for everyone during the holidays or is it something you work on through out the year?

Huge fan of all you guys – loving your podcast!

I was thrilled to learn you’re all fans of Frank Howarth and Matthias Wandell.

Would love to see some more collaboration videos from you!

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers from Australia :)

I really enjoyed the podcast. I found out all three of you had the same problems and the same discovery of better tools. I thought I was the only one with feet problems. I was surprised, when April said she had bad feet. I’m reorganizing my shop from a Nick Ferry shop, to a Jay Bates shop. Nick, I feel comfortable in both shops. I understand your problems. I have a lamp repair shop as a retirement job. It is always getting in the way of my woodworking. Keep up the good work.

Im really enjoying this podcast. My first woodworking experience since deciding that I wanted to start making stuff was to build a large 4×8 gaming table. I found a husband of a friend who has a shop in his basement who helped me (actually I helped him). It was an awesome experience, although I dont think I used any of the power tools. It was a great learning experience!

I take kids ( 6 to 12th grade) age on mission trips every summer, and I teach them how to use tools that are needed to do the work. I keep an eagle eye on them to make sure they are using it properly and sometimes do the work myself, when they get tired.

G’day from Australia guys, you’d be surprised how many people from Australia tune into your channels because they are great, I find woodworking great fun & building up my Arsenal slowly as it takes time to save but rewarding in the journey, will you include Steve Ramsay in future podcasts, he was my first inspiration to online tutorials, cheers from DownUnder…

Do you have rules that your kids have to follow before visiting the shop? I’m trying to teach my 4 year old grandson to stop at the door & ask before coming in. Also trying to get him to wear shoes.
Do you lock your shop? I now try to pull all the safety locks from my bigger tools after a young visitor turned on my TS.
